Coming off a string of excellent top 10 hits, the Gibb brothers in 1969 decided to tackle an expansive, double-record experiment in Sgt. Pepper-y orchestral pop. The result is Odessa, a gorgeous sprawl which offers a little bit of everything: lilting melancholy (''Black Diamond''), acoustic roots rock (''Marley Purt Drive''), and lots of syrupy strings that really don't belong. Still, this three-disc deluxe reissue which includes a mono mix and a full CD of demos and alternate versions makes a strong case for induction into the Academy of the Underrated. A–
