Anatomy of a Hit

Jason Mraz recalls how the popular song took four years to go form album reject to Grammy-nominated smash

Summer 2004
Mraz writes ''I'm Yours'' while working on his second CD, Mr. A-Z. It doesn't make the cut, but it's later included on a limited-edition EP. ''I disregarded it,'' says Mraz. ''I thought, this is my happy little hippie song, and I'll sing it live.''

June 2007
The crowd at Sweden's annual Peace & Love festival erupts when he plays the song, by now a live staple. ''The place went absolutely bonkers, as if I was singing the Swedish national anthem. That's when I realized it needed a home.''

February 2008
''I'm Yours'' is the lead single from We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things. It grows into a worldwide hit — and an Internet phenomenon, as fans post videos of themselves singing it. ''Some people really stumble through it. I find those the most endearing.''

December 2008
The song scores Grammy nods for Song of the Year and Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. ''It was great,'' says Mraz of getting the news. ''But I went to bed early because I had a full day ahead of me. There was no champagne or hookers.''
