It Only Hurts When I Laugh (1991)

EW's GRADE
B-

Details Lead Performance: Jann Browne; Genre: Country

No longer content, as in the old days, to be simply a cowboy's sweetheart, country's fairer sex now exercises its right to explore a woman's full range of roles, as new albums attest. But Jann Browne proves herself a much less modern singer. Her second album, It Only Hurts When I Laugh, preserves her image as a woman faithful to country's older sounds. Despite the best artistic intentions, Brown sings nearly ever song the same way, her earnest soprano seemingly impervious to shades of emotion. B-
