Ordinary Riches (2009)

EW's GRADE
B-

Details Release Date: Feb 24, 2009; Lead Performance: Company of Thieves; Genre: Rock

This Chicago trio's debut album — which it originally released DIY-style in 2007 before scoring a record deal — plays like a series of seemingly inadvisable mash-ups: ''Under the Umbrella'' could be Blues Traveler as fronted by Karen O of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, while ''Oscar Wilde'' calls up memories of both the Stones and the Cardigans. Yet thanks to Genevieve Schatz's consistently gutsy soul-chick vocals and her bandmates' energetic arrangements, Ordinary Riches somehow steers clear of train-wreck territory. These Thieves haven't quite decided what's worth stealing yet, but their technique can't be denied. B?
