Eschewing horror's mainstream scribes, Eric B. Martin draws from both historical fact (George R. Stewart's grim, wonderfully detailed account of the Donner Party's first foray into cannibalism) and thoughtful fiction (Haruki Murakami's meditative tale of a killer typhoon) in this literate spookfest The Campfire Collection: Spine-Tingling Tales to Tell in the Dark. Despite the title, most of the pieces are far too detailed and intricate to make for casual campfire conversation, but for the lone reader, they'll make for some really unnerving bedtime stories.
