Too many metal bands become muscle-bound with riffs. Not the Deftones. This Sacramento group isn't afraid to put melody into its songs or make its chord changes catchy all without losing its heaviness or edge. On White Pony, album No. 3, the long-respected band veers between sounding like a sweeter Korn and a more user-friendly Tool. Their brutality will burn its way into your memory banks. B+
