When former Parsons band mate John Nuese asked Nashville's hipper alt-country types to finish off some of GP's lyrics, it could have been a ''Free as a Bird''-style disaster. Instead they create some gorgeous moments on The Gram Parsons Notebook: The Last Whippoorwill, like the Woodys' soulful take on ''A Song for You'' and Jim Lauderdale's aching ''Blessing for Being.'' But since everyone here sounds much more wholesome than Gram ever was, you're still left longing for his inspired blend of glamour and grit. B
