In the Spur of the Moment (2012)

EW's GRADE
B+

Details Lead Performance: Steve Turre; Genre: Jazz

That Ray Charles shows up as a guest pianist on four bluesy tracks of In the Spur of the Moment would be enough to make this a special recording, but Steve Turre — a master trombonist and (yes) seashell player — has even more tricks up his sleeve. Two other outstanding pianists, Stephen Scott and Cuban virtuoso Chucho Valdes, get in on the action, lifting this smart, beautifully executed project clear off the ground. B+
