Lovers Rock (2014)

EW's GRADE
B

Details Lead Performance: Sade; Genre: R&B

After a long silence, Sade comes back with Lovers Rock, a CD full of aural comfort food — lullabies for the lovelorn. Heard in the context of the year 2000, Sade now sounds like a precursor to low-volume ironists such as Belle and Sebastian — except that she's trying for, as one song title has it, ''Flow,'' a hip-hop term for a fluidity her lyrics rarely possess as fully as her melodies. One pretty song melts into the next; the result is an undifferentiated dreaminess. B
