The Best of Bobby Fuller Four (1990)

EW's GRADE
B+

Details Lead Performance: Bobby Fuller Four; Genre: Reissues

Like the great Eddie Cochran a decade earlier, Bobby Fuller was a multitalented rock & roll original whose many creative achievements never received adequate commercial recognition and who died tragically in his early 20s. Fuller's engaging music, recorded in 1965 and 1966, has been popularized via numerous cover versions, but the real thing has a freshness and sincerity that makes it special. Cut from newly recovered master tapes that give The Best of Bobby Fuller a real sonic advantage over Rhino's corresponding Golden Archive Series vinyl/cassette compilation, ''I Fought the Law,'' ''Another Sad and Lonely Night,'' and ''Let Her Dance'' (plus other fine, if lesser-known, tracks) make this an essential retrospective. B+
