Blue Sunshine (1990)

EW's GRADE
C+

Details Lead Performance: The Glove; Genre: Rock

In 1983, two prominent figures from English New Wave's dour wing — Cure leader Robert Smith and Steve Severin of Siouxsie and the Banshees — took a busman's holiday with a couple of friends to make this odd album. Previously unreleased in the U.S., Blue Sunshine integrates the pair's individual styles and neo-psychedelic noodling with mixed success. Between two really good songs (''Like an Animal,'' ''Punish Me With Kisses'') and some droney dross, the rest is listenable but unmemorable. Keep this one in mind for the rabid Cure fan in your life. C+
