No doubt the live performance of ''I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues'' slayed the audience. But on disc, it's a rather overwrought affair between glitzy divas. A raspy Sir Elton nearly busts a gut to inject bluesy grit into his megahit, while the divine Ms. MJB's smoky but oddly tentative delivery keeps veering off-key. Ultimately, it comes down to whether you think ''I Guess...'' is a heart-searing pop classic — or mainstream fodder that has nothing to do with the blues. C+
