On tour in 1999, Pat Metheny brought out a smoking little outfit with bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Bill Stewart that allowed the guitarist to stretch out fruitfully on old favorites, jazz standards, and incisive new tunes, captured here on Trio -- Live. It's no wonder he'd want to strut a bit, but a double CD may be too much of a showcase for any but Metheny fanatics. Expansiveness is expected, though, from a player credited here with using, at times, a 42-string guitar. B
