For one shining moment, on 1993's Are You Gonna Go My Way, the ever-derivative Lenny Kravitz became his ''own man,'' as they say, and it's no surprise that the best tracks on the collection Greatest Hits originated there. But before and since, his specialty has been the dreariest of retread rock. Essential only if one yearns to imagine an alternate universe in which the Beatles, Led Zep, and the Spinners, among others, were fronted by... Lenny Kravitz. C+
