Although they hit it big in '93 with ''Runaway Train,'' the rough-hewn, Replacements-style rockers Soul Asylum have always seemed most comfortable slugging it out on the periphery of rock stardom, and their earlier, looser material remains their most impassioned. Sadly, save for just a few tracks (including the lovably ramshackle ''Tied to the Tracks" and the animated ''Cartoon''), the 19-track collection Black Gold: The Best of Soul Asylum focuses mostly on more recent years, during which their once mighty snarl has slipped into a halfhearted smirk.
