Reif Larsen's The Selected Works Of T.S. Spivet is a fascinating experiment. Nearly every page is annotated with maps, charts, and illustrations that track the journey of the novel's main character, 12-year-old cartographer Tecumseh Sparrow Spivet. After he receives a science award from the Smithsonian, the wunderkind traverses the country to collect it, consumed all the while by a family tragedy that weighs on his heart. While Larsen's narrative isn't perfect (and feels disjointed in its final third), Spivet is still a mightily impressive debut, a wistful glimpse at that moment when adulthood threatens those last, vital days of youth.
