A Little Less Luster

Cannes Film Festival -- The recession took hold of this year's festivities with fewer crowds and subdued spirits

The global recession wasn't invited to the 62nd Cannes Film Festival, which kicked off May 13, but it showed up anyway, creating a far less rambunctious vibe than last year, when Indiana Jones stormed the Croisette. ''It's more subdued than normal,'' says Sony Pictures Classics co-president Michael Barker, who premiered Pedro Almodovar's Broken Embraces, starring Penélope Cruz. ''It's easier to get into theaters, to get in restaurants.'' The widely adored opening film, Disney-Pixar's Up, offered levity, and stars did their part: Brad Pitt arrived to promote Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, while Mariah Carey showed up to support her small role in Precious. (Good news: It's no Glitter.) In other words, the good life goes on somehow.
