Iggy sings ballads. In French. With clarinet solos. He also dabbles in Dixieland jazz, spoken word, and chilled electro-lounge music on his 15th solo album. If that sounds hideous, or hilarious, it's actually a little bit of both. You know it's a long way from ''I Wanna Be Your Dog'' when the Ig solemnly asks, ''What is a dog but
a machine for loving?'' Pop's baritone howl is one of rock's all-time greatest instruments, as he affirms on Préliminaires' ''Nice to Be Dead.'' But when he's working in autumn-of-life reflective-crooner mode, he sounds like little more than a tourist in the wrong neighborhood. D
