Alive TV: Reckin' Shop: Live From Brooklyn (1992)

Reckin' Shop is a fine, quick, half-hour documentary about hip-hop dancers in Brooklyn. The dancers include both amateurs and professionals (a few have worked in videos with Michael Jackson and Mariah Carey), and all are intent on proving, as one remarks, that ''Brooklyn is a planet within itself.'' That is to say, the spine- twisting, rubber-legged moves of these young African-American artists derive from a neighborhood style unique in the world of hip-hop.

Director Diane Martel avoids narration, allowing the performers to speak for themselves, and Reckin' Shop is shot in black and white, which emphasizes a gritty immediacy that makes the dancers' fluid moves all the more witty. A-
