''HawthoRNe'''s Michael Vartan plugs his new show...and apologizes for an earlier career misstep

WATCH THIS

HawthoRNe
''When I first heard about it, I thought, 'Do we really need another medical drama?' [But] it takes a look at hospital life through the nurses' perspective, which we don't often see. I'm the head of surgery, Jada [Pinkett Smith] is the head of nursing, and we're constantly butting heads. Jada's electric on screen. The first couple of scenes I had with her — that stare is so powerful, it's kind of unfair.... I struggled a little with my part in the beginning, because I felt that I was too young to play the head of surgery. But I drew inspiration from a strange place: Doogie Howser. Just know that my inner monologue most of the time is Doogie Howser.''

SORRY ABOUT THAT

The Next Best Thing (2000)
''I want to apologize to all of you who had the misfortune of seeing me in this romantic comedy. I played Madonna's bad boyfriend. You've got to be a pretty bad boyfriend if not only does your girl leave you, she leaves you for a gay man. I was cast as a rap producer, and there is a scene that makes me want to stick needles in my eyes. I'm in the studio, producing a rap track, and you see me as an idiot saying, 'Yo, more bass! More bass!' and I'm smacking the fictitious ass in the sky. It's one of the most embarrassing things I've ever done. I don't know what movie tickets cost at the time, but if they were $7, I owe you all a refund.''
