From 1991's surfing thriller Point Break to 2002's submarine drama K-19: The Widowmaker to her Iraq-war movie The Hurt Locker, Bigelow, 57, seems to be drawn to material usually tackled by male directors. She chalks it
up to wanting to give audiences an experience they can't have
themselves, ''and have it be a palpable, visceral experience, not just an
intellectual one.''
STAR QUALITY
She deliberately cast virtual unknowns as Locker's heroes, because
audiences wouldn't have believed a big-name star was in danger of dying
at any moment. In combat, she says, ''you don't know who's going to die.
No rank will protect you.''
LIGHTEN UP
Bigelow hasn't lined up her next project but says she'd consider a
non-action film. ''I'd love to do a comedy. If you have one, send it
over. I'm serious!''
