Details Lead Performance: Maggie's Dream

Anyone intrigued by Lenny Kravitz' debut last year might want to sample the soulful, guitar-driven funk-rock on this first album from his former band. Like Kravitz, these guys favor a retro sound, with vocal and instrumental patterns that slowly grow intense; the result is sometimes overwrought on Maggie's Dream. Still, a sharp rhythm section and warm, gospel-flavored harmonies save the group from its occasional pretensions. B-
