Like many of today's foremost bands, 10,000 Maniacs spent time in the independent-label farm system before finding a mass audience. Remixed and reissued on a single disc, the group's first two releases contain a louder, stranger version of its refined electro-folk. Caribbean rhythms, noise guitar, and a vocal by guitarist John Lombardo on Hope Chest clearly set these eclectic efforts in the past; Natalie Merchant's distinctive voice binds them tightly to the present.
