Surgery for Maura Tierney Delays NBC's 'Parenthood'
Fans were startled by NBC's July 10 announcement that its fall family
drama Parenthood was being pushed to midseason due to a ''medical
evaluation'' for cast member Maura Tierney. Seeking to clarify the
situation, Tierney, 44, released her own forthright statment on July 13:
''In an effort to guard my privacy, it seems that the wording of NBC's
press release has unfortunately caused some confusion and undue alarm
about my health. I have discovered a tumor in my breast which requires
surgery. I will not know either my exact diagnosis or course of
treatment until that surgery is performed.... My doctors have all
assured me this is a very treatable condition. I'm very optimistic.''
Production on Parenthood, which costars Peter Krause and Dax Shepard, will go on hiatus for eight weeks, and the show will have a
not-yet-determined midseason debut. Meanwhile, NBC's nurse-centric
Mercy, starring Michelle Trachtenberg (Gossip Girl), is being moved up
to the fall, though at press time, the network has not confirmed whether
the series will inherit Parenthood's Sept. 23 premiere date or its Wednesday-at-8 p.m. time slot.
