Raul (riveting Alfredo Castro),
a psychopathic, sourpussed, middle-aged thug in 1970s Chile, becomes obsessed with the
disco king immortalized by John Travolta in Saturday Night Fever in Tony Moreno, this expertly queasy-making drama from Chilean filmmaker Pablo Larrain. Dreaming of
winning a Tony Manero look-and-dance-alike contest, Raul devotes most of his time to perfecting his act, and the rest of the time wreaking shocking violence.
Larrain's (literally) dark, edgy movie is a precise artistic commentary on Augusto Pinochet's miserable regime, which was
under way while Travolta gyrated. B+
