Chris Brown Apologizes: But Will It Work?
He pled guilty in an L.A. court on June 22 to assaulting former
girlfriend Rihanna in a February incident. Still, it took four more
weeks for Chris Brown, 20, to make his contrition public. On July 20,
the R&B singer issued an apology via a video statement. ''What I did was
unacceptable, 100 percent,'' he said, somberly addressing the camera. ''I
can only ask and pray that you forgive me.'' But are those words enough
to salvage his career? One crisis PR maven, who preferred not to be
named, thinks it's too little, too late. ''It would have been great a
couple months ago. And the tape got better as it went along the
beginning was terrible, really disingenuous.'' Brown says in the video
that he plans to ''do some interviews and answer some questions in the
future,'' so further apologies may be in the works, but his next
professional move remains up in the air. Deflating rumors that a musical
comeback is imminent, a representative for his label, Jive, tells EW,
''We have no album slated for release.'' In any case, the PR expert says
Brown has a long way to go before winning back the trust of his young
fan base and perhaps more important their parents, who hold the purse
strings. ''He's got to do community service as part of his sentence; try
to make it real. Don't just make an album and make believe it didn't
happen. It's going to be hard. Nobody's going to forget those photos of
Rihanna.''

Patrick Swayze ''Continues to Do Well''
Texas native Patrick Swayze, 56, said he would ''cowboy up'' and fight
after being diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer in January 2008,
and this photo, showing the actor looking healthier while out in L.A. on
July 11, proves he's a man of his word. ''He has gained weight and he
continues to do well while in treatment,'' the actor's rep told EW.
Though his A&E series The Beast was canceled in June, Swayze and wife
Lisa Niemi, who celebrated their 34th wedding anniversary in June, are
nearly finished co-writing his memoir. The Time of My Life, which is set
to be published by Atria Books on Sept. 29, chronicles their love
story in sickness and in health.
