Superman in Action Comics (1993)

Details Writer: Mark Waid; Genres: Art/Fine Art, Pop Culture; Publisher: Abbeville Press

This nifty big-little book collects the first 25 years of Action Comics covers, charting the growth of Superman from surly car tosser to all-American icon. It's hard to believe that today's comics, with their cluttered, pompous multiple covers, will someday possess such campy charm; the mid-'50s issues, in which Superman's greatest enemy seems to be Lois Lane's femininity, are especially endearing. B+
