The Ballads of Madison County (1993)

EW's GRADE
D

Details Lead Performance: Robert James Waller; Genres: Pop, Rock

It was inevitable. Robert James Waller, author of the mawkish bestseller, The Bridges of Madison County, whips out a companion album (using some of the book's characters) to cash in on Madison's feel-good philosophy. Like the novel, The Ballads of Madison County probably looked good on paper. The wispy-voiced Waller has been called ''a hero to the middle-aged,'' but if this saccharine recording debut is any indication of those upcoming middle years, please take me now, Lord. D
