A high school history teacher (Jeremy Irons) takes his American students back in time to the English fens of his youth and, even further, to the family secrets that continue to haunt him and his wife (Irons' real-life spouse, Sinead Cusack). As he talks, the kids realize they're seeing a man coming apart at the seams. A crafty, erotic jigsaw puzzle that loops in and out of the decades, Waterland is exquisitely shot melancholy of a brilliant blue. B+
