A dull Oxford don (Palin) meets a young Irish-American woman (Alvarado) on a vacation in Switzerland and, bit by bit, is able to acknowledge his feelings for her. The theme of melting British reserve in American Friends is about as old as Stonehenge itself, and watching the film, which is decently crafted and written, is not quite as exciting as waiting in an endless video-store line to rent it.
