What do you get when you cross Teena Marie and Nina Hagen? Jan Child, an artist who thinks nothing of spiking an album of progressive dance-floor jams with liberal doses of heavy-metal guitar, executing a raga-and-drone hymn, or tossing in a straight-up grunge-rock song. Here Not There is all very intriguing, but in the age of the pigeonhole, her ambitions are almost sure to prove a commercial liability. B
