Its credentials are legendary: Directed by Frank Capra and among his personal favorites, it's also one of the first movies ever to deal openly with interracial sexual attraction. But the daring of its theme is continually undercut by a one-sided view of Chinese wartime brutality and some racist dialogue (''You yellow swine!''). Still, The Bitter Tea of General Yen is never boring dramatically, and the cinematography is often stunning. C+
