Abandoning traditional narrative techniques like linear story-telling and characterization, the late Sergei Paradjanov made movies that were unlike any others. This freely associative tale of a medieval Armenian troubadour experts a strange, sensual, druggie spell. Paradjanov's films, surreal, often minimalist, are like performance art and are for the intellectually adventurous only. The Color of Pomegranates, in its refusal to give the viewer any bearings at all, may be heavy going even for fans. B
