BOOKS
GREEN LANTERN: BLACKEST NIGHT
RIP Batman — or not. In this DC Comics miniseries, a dark new force could raise dearly departed superheroes from the dead.

MOVIES
MERYL STREEP in Julie & Julia
Sure, Amy Adams and Stanley Tucci are fab, and Nora Ephron's script is delicious. Streep, however, simply steals the show (what else is new?) as a buoyant, vivid, sexy Julia Child. It's her Oscar to lose.

CD/DVD
SUGARLAND LIVE ON THE INSIDE
Jennifer Nettles is a golden-voiced force of nature, Kristian Bush a mandolin-toting ball of energy, and the joy in the Atlanta duo's shows (Bubbles! Glow sticks! Stunts!) is now on DVD. Along with the CD of live covers — from Kings of Leon's ''Sex on Fire'' to Beyoncé's ''Irreplaceable'' — the set is sure to convert even the country-phobic.

TV
SHARK TANK on ABC
The reality show features entrepreneurs pitching their business dreams to a ''shark tank'' of investors. Some emerge flush with cash, others just flushed.

DVD
I LOVE YOU, MAN
Isn't it bromantic? Paul Rudd brings tenderness to his role as a real estate agent whose fiancée (Rashida Jones) and her pals consider him just one of the girls — until he sets out to find a best man and ends up with a best buddy (Jason Segel). The disc includes the standard extras, but the real treat is the film itself — funny, sweet, and awkward, in all the right ways.

GAMES
MADDEN NFL 10
The latest in EA Sports' best-selling Madden series combines gaming with fantasy football, letting you play team owner and manage your franchise online. (Trading for Adrian Peterson, left, would make for an auspicious start.) Kickoff is Aug. 14, so get those thumbs (and wallets) ready.

MUSIC
''KING RAT'' video, directed by Heath Ledger
In 2007, Ledger collaborated with Modest Mouse on this chilling animated music video (now on iTunes, with proceeds benefitting Sea Shepherd Conservation Society), which depicts a bizarro world where humans get harpooned — and much more — by whales.

BOOKS
THIS IS WHERE I LEAVE YOU, by Jonathan Tropper
Yes, it's too early to pick the Book of the Year. But if this novel about a guy trying to find normal after his wife leaves and his dad dies isn't a contender, we'll eat our Kindle.

MUSIC
''YOU'RE A JERK,'' New Boyz
We're hard-pressed to explain the hold this single's unexpectedly catchy (and shrill and repetitive) hook has on us. But the Boyz' beat and swagger make it addictive, and if being fans makes us jerks, so be it.

READER'S CHOICE: TV
MICHAEL & MICHAEL HAVE ISSUES on Comedy Central
Learn what fans of Stella and The State already know — Michael Ian Black and Michael Showalter are masters of absurdist comedy. On Issues, a sketch-show-within-a-sitcom, they do petty so well, it's almost profound. —Submitted by Jenna

READER'S CHOICE: MUSIC
''REMEMBER ME,'' T.I. featuring Mary J. Blige
''I just listened to this all weekend, and I still can't get enough, especially Blige's vocals. Is it me, or does she sound better than ever?'' —Dennis

READER'S CHOICE: BOOKS
GREY GARDENS, edited by Sarah and Rebekah Maysles
''I got this as a gift. It's my favorite read of the summer. The transcripts (recorded during the making of the 1975 documentary, Grey Gardens) from the original interviews with the Beales are riveting — and it is virtually bursting with bonus treats like illustrations and a CD.'' —Corrina

READER'S CHOICE: MUSIC
''STRAIGHT THROUGH MY HEART,'' the Backstreet Boys
''Yeah, its kinda cheesy, but it's the BSB and for those of us who aren't overly impressed with our own tastes in music, it is a pure pop song.'' —Elizabeth

READER'S CHOICE: TV
WILLIAM SHATNER'S ''POETRY'' on The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien
''Shatner's hilarious beat-poetry readings of Sarah Palin's speeches and tweets are pure GENIUS.'' —Emmy

READER'S CHOICE: MUSIC
''1901,'' Phoenix
''Somebody just turned me on to a band called Phoenix. Their song ''1901'' is so awesome, I have to suggest it.'' —Crispy
