A COMPELLING STORY Kanye's live-performance album is worth checking out
Hotheaded, thin-skinned, prodigiously talented, disarmingly filterless — Kanye West is a man of many facets, and boring is rarely one of them. In this live-performance special, originally aired on VH1 last year and now available as a CD/DVD set, he doesn't so much tell stories as pour his id onto the stage in rambling, free-form fragments. West's musings on O.J. Simpson, Tenacious D, and the plastic surgeon under whose care his mother passed away in 2007 complement (or, just as often, stray loopily from) fan favorites like ''Love Lockdown,'' ''Touch the Sky,'' ''Stronger,'' and ''Heartless.'' Whether singing or speaking, he does it all with a sort of messy, testifying fervor: There are many congregants in the Church of Kanye, but none so devout as the man himself. A–
