Losing Charlotte is the tale of two sisters — diffident, introverted Knox and brash beauty Charlotte — suspended in an uneasy détente for years:The
former maintains a quiet, regimented life on their parents' Kentucky horse farm, while the latter cuts a glamorously messy boho swath through Manhattan. When Charlotte dies unexpectedly giving birth, however, Knox is forced to grapple with both that loss and the tiny twin boys she's left behind. Heather Clay's writing style is dreamy, elliptical, and often opaque; she describes moments with beautiful precision and aptly relays the murky, battering numbness of grief, but that murkiness too often extends to her characters and plot. Though there are lovely sketches here, the picture is incomplete. B
