No matter how ''Sex and the City'' ended, it was going to end in The City, not in Paris. So says star-executive producer Sarah Jessica Parker, who unveiled in USA Today the two alternate endings that were shot but discarded in the making of Sunday's series finale. [WARNING: if you haven't seen the finale yet, this paragraph contains spoilers.] While viewers saw Carrie break up with Petrovsky (Mikhail Baryshnikov) in Paris and return to Manhattan with Big (Chris Noth), all three possible endings ''brought me home to New York,'' Parker told USA Today on Monday. ''The second one was that Petrovsky was coming home after me. And the third one was me coming home to New York alone.''

''We were very careful about the choices we made'' for the final episode, Parker added. Don't expect her alternate endings to show up on the inevitable DVD. ''They were just silly,'' she said.

Early Nielsen estimates suggest that 12 to 13 million people watched the last episode, about twice the show's usual viewership. It's no wonder HBO is trying to parlay the show into a big-screen feature, with ''Sex'' writer-director Michael Patrick King currently penning a screenplay that he would direct. ''We certainly have our eye on it,'' Parker said of the ''Sex'' cast and crew's movie plan. ''I'm being vague because it's rather unclear at the moment. Our eye is certainly on that destination. I think we would to do it sooner rather than later.''
