The original Driving Miss Daisy began in a 74-seat theater in 1987, and played its entire three-year run Off Broadway...even after its Pulitzer Prize and Oscar-winning film adaptation. But no one's going to put the artist formerly known as the voice of Darth Vader and Britain's most famous actress/activist anywhere except the Great White Way. So James Earl Jones and Vanessa Redgrave deliver high-gloss performances as crusty chauffeur Hoke and crotchety widow Daisy in Alfred Uhry's delicate dramedy. But they're practically dwarfed by John Lee Beatty's stately floating sets. Even worse, there's no apparent bond between these supposed best friends. All that seems to connect them is Daisy's unfortunately named son, Boolie (played with ample square-jawed, Southern-fried charm by Boyd Gaines). Also completely lost in translation: Redgrave's Atlanta accent. C
