TUBE TALK Walters and Sawyer have long vied for top ''gets'' at ABC, most notably, last fall, when Walters scheduled a chat with Yasser Arafat on ''20/20,'' only to be scooped by Sawyer on ''Good Morning America'' after Sawyer said she received an invitation to fly to the Middle East to interview the Palestinian leader and felt she couldn't say no. ABC News president David Westin told the two to make up, but the Rosie roundelay suggests that the truce is over. Not so, says publicist Cindi Berger, who represents both Walters and O'Donnell. ''Certainly, Barbara knew Diane had the interview,'' Berger told the New York Daily News. ''But she was not trying to upstage Diane. There are no problems between them.''...

Do you think college students would rather spend their late nights discussing Nietzsche, or watching reruns of MTV's ''Spring Break: Acapulco Undercover'' and ''Beavis and Butthead''? MTV is betting on the latter as it ponders creating a college-only late-night cable network. The outlet, called MTV University (or MTVU for short) would be entering a market already dominated by Burly Bear, which feeds programs like ''The SexTalk Show'' and ''VideoGame Explosion'' to campuses. MTVU wouldn't even be second into the arena; newcomer Zilo has already beaten it there. Still, nearly a million beer-drinking, condom-buying undergrads watch these shows every week, so it's no wonder MTV is drooling over the target demo like a fratboy at a Friday night kegger.

Is Paul McCartney going Vegas? London's Sunday Times reports that the MGM Grand is hoping to book him for April 6, the night Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis were supposed to fight for the heavyweight championship there, before Nevada boxing officials revoked Tyson's license to KO. The paper reports that the hotel/casino has offered McCartney $4 million to play the one night in the arena, where the Rolling Stones, Barbra Streisand, Elton John, and Billy Joel have also performed. Said an MGM Grand spokesman, ''We have not signed him yet, but talks are continuing, and we hope to make an announcement soon.''...

George Michael's gotta have faith that Scotland Yard can find the burglars who ransacked his home over the weekend and made off with at least $144,000 worth of goods. The thieves disabled a supposedly state-of-the-art $60,000 security system at Michael's estate in the upscale Hampstead suburb of London. They reportedly stole art, jewelry, family heirlooms, and designer clothes, and got away in Michael's Aston Martin DB7 sportscar. The former Wham! frontman was in Los Angeles at the time. The singer, whose new single, ''Freeek!,'' comes out March 18, didn't offer a statement, but he must have been pretty freeeked out....
