Triple Crown winner Secretariat, the horse who graced the covers of TIME, SPORTS ILLUSTRATED, and Newsweek in the same week in 1973, is an American legend. Less well known is Penny Chenery, the housewife who took over from her the horse farm that the thoroughbred champ called home. Lane, with a perm and a country-club chic wardrobe, portrays the formidable woman who challenges the male-dominated sport. ''People just saw her hair and her legs and thought 'Wow, what are you doing in the barn, lady?''' says Lane.
