The Deal Report

MOVIES Take a whiff of what The Rock is cookin'! The ex-wrestler and Rundown star has signed for the movie adaptation of arcade classic Spy Hunter. From behind the wheel of the awesome G-6155, his Rockness will machine-gun and ram evil automobiles off the road in what Universal hopes will kick off a gnarly franchise starting summer 2005.... Can you see gubernatorial candidate Gary Coleman with an '80s-style bushy mustache and a loud Hawaiian shirt, leaning out of a lipstick red 308 GTS Ferrari? We can, upon hearing that producer Brian Grazer has hooked the rights to turn Tom Selleck's old CBS smash, Magnum, P.I., into a movie. No casting yet, but once again, EW endorses Gary!... Julia Roberts (I Love Trouble) may star in Strange Son, which her company, Red Om will adapt from an upcoming novel about a pioneer in autism research.

TELEVISION Among the stars lined up to guest on the next season of HBO's The Sopranos: Tim Daly, David Lee Roth, Polly Bergen, Charles Barkley, Frankie Valli.... Like Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, Samuel L. Jackson and his wife, Latanya Richardson, are developing a show for UPN, an untitled drama about a church dynasty in which Richardson will star.

BOOKS Stephen King's wizardly powers are mightier than even we imagined. Less than two weeks after EW's novice back-page columnist called Ron McLarty's The Memory of Running ''The Best Book You Can't Read,'' Viking Penguin has awarded McLarty a two-book deal, reportedly worth more than $2 million. Now touch a blind man and make him see, Stephen King, make him see!
