It may not contain a pop hit as big as last year’s surprise smash ''Day ’n’ Nite,'' but Kid Cudi’s second LP, Man on the Moon II: The Legend of Mr. Rager, is something much more lasting: a cohesively constructed concept album that will reward repeat listens. Arraying 17 tracks into five ''acts,'' he explores the ups and downs of hard-partying stardom over psychedelic backdrops that defy genre categorization. His half-sung vocals, alternately surly and vulnerable, weave in and out of the mix along with distorted guitars, sweeping strings, twinkling harpsichords, ghostly samples, and who knows what else. No other major-label rapper in 2010 is pushing boundaries in quite the same way. A–
