The pieces of Paul Auster’s latest jigsaw puzzle Sunset Park, about four men and women squatting in an abandoned Brooklyn home, don’t fit together well. In his previous novel, Invisible, the characters’ interlocking perspectives worked as a literary device, like microscopic lenses of increasing magnification under the eyepiece. Here, the multiple vantage points only kill any narrative momentum gained from the tragic accident at the heart of the novel. And the writing itself is too full of monotonous lists and flavorless descriptions. Once you get the whole thing assembled in front of you, the picture’s really not much to look at. C+
