Complex African-American responses to the fury that launched the Black Panthers in the 1960s reverberate still when a former member (The Hurt Locker's great Anthony Mackie) returns to his old Philadelphia neighborhood in the summer of 1976. Writer-director Tanya Hamilton's intellectually ambitious debut drama Night Catches Us (in theaters Dec. 3) is all the more notable for setting well-drawn fictional characters in a fraught, real moment in civil rights history.
