Fox hopes the fall debut of New Orleans cop drama ''K-Ville'' and the Kelsey Grammer/Patricia Heaton comedy ''Back to You'' will help them survive until ''American Idol'' kicks off their winter lineup

The American Idol network unveiled its latest strategy for getting through the fall and onto January, when its real season begins: Give ''House'' a ratings-boosting, post-Super Bowl shot, and in the meantime, stick with a lot of reality and hope for the best. Fox Entertainment President Peter Ligouri admitted to some disappointment with last fall and swore the net had ''much stronger development'' this time around: ''We greenlit some series we thought could be manufactured into hits,'' he said of last season, the implication being that it's all about quality, passion projects going into 2007-08. To that end, four new dramas and three new comedies will join the schedule sometime this year, with the big push coming with Idol and 24's January returns.

Post-Katrina New Orleans cop drama K-Ville, immortal-cop drama New Amsterdam, and Kelsey Grammer/Patricia Heaton comedy Back to You — Fox's most promising newcomer — will make a go of it in the fall, despite Fox's perennially rocky baseball schedule. (The net promises pre-emptions will drop from 26 last year to a mere 14 this year.) Less-risky reality propositions include The Search for the Next Great American Band (from Idol's producers), Kitchen Nightmares (celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay fixes disastrous restaurants), and Nashville (Laguna Beach producers bring you the country music scene).

When Fox's real season begins in the winter, expect Terminator-inspired The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Juliana Marguiles-does-Shark drama Canterbury's Law, Gilmore Girls' creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Dan Palladino's sitcom The Return of Jezebel James (as if the Palladinos weren't enough, that also has Parker Posey as a star), and singles-in-the-city sitcom The Rules for Starting Over (oh, Rashida Jones, we hope they're keeping your Office chair warm for you!).

And, naturally, expect this all to change by the time the shows actually start airing in January. But, hey, we appreciate Fox's effort in putting together a plan for six-months-plus from now.
