In the late '60s and early '70s, Charlton Heston was the leathery face of sci-fi apocalypse. After being stranded on the Planet of the Apes and gunning down pasty-faced ghouls in The Omega Man, his next assignment was getting to the bottom of a mysterious foodstuff called Soylent Green (1973, PG, 1 hr., 37 mins.). Just out on Blu-ray, Richard Fleischer's dystopian thriller set in an overpopulated, famine-stricken 2022 New York is a wonderfully silly slice of future schlock, featuring some of Heston's zestiest overacting. Even if you're already hip to this guilty pleasure's surprise ending, it's absolutely worth watching again. B
