Madonna's directorial effort follows a modern New Yorker and her historic fixation: the monarch-chasing American divorcée Wallis Simpson

Madonna makes her highly anticipated directorial debut with this time-shifting tale of a modern woman named Wally Winthrop (Abbie Cornish), who is obsessed with the defiant love story between American Wallis Simpson (Andrea Riseborough) and King Edward VIII (James D'Arcy), who abdicated the throne to be with her. While Winthrop delves deeper into the life of Simpson, the story also shows the perspectives of Simpson herself, revealing that the seemingly romantic affair was not as perfect as it seemed. ''W.E. is about the nature of true love, and the sacrifices and compromises that are often made,'' says the Material Director. ''I've wanted to tell this story for a very long time, and bringing it to life has been a great adventure for me.''
