Nothing makes ''sense'' in this crazy-beautiful reverie about movies, love, the love of movies, and the inevitability of human melancholy by the perpetually mysterious French filmmaker Léos Carax (The Lovers on the Bridge). And yet everything is exactly as it should be in such an exhilarating puzzle, one of the grand cinematic eruptions of the year. The rubbery, indispensable Carax regular Denis Lavant (Beau Travail) plays Monsieur Oscar, a man whose job — or is it a mission? — is to transform himself over and over in the course of a day: beggar lady, acrobat, thug, and more. Driven around in a long white limo (by gorgeous seventysomething Edith Scob, from Eyes Without a Face), this professional shape-shifter becomes a kind of excavator of souls. A
