Diana, Princess of Wales, was one of the most celebrated (and scrutinized) figures of the 20th century, from her glamorous 1981 wedding to her tragic 1997 death beside then boyfriend Dodi Fayed. But director Oliver Hirschbiegel's biopic centers on a less well-known period: her two-year relationship with British-Pakistani surgeon Hasnat Khan (Naveen Andrews). Under his influence, Diana (Naomi Watts) traded couture for flak jackets and became an advocate for banning land mines. ''I didn't really know a lot about Diana, and to be honest, I never really cared,'' says Hirschbiegel (The Invasion). ''That man got her to reinvent herself and find a new aim in her life.'' And helped make a princess a real political force.
