Werner Herzog (Grizzly Man) has documented the work of extraordinary people before, but none, perhaps, as astonishing as the prehistoric artists whose drawings in France's Chauvet Cave are the oldest known to date. With awe, a Herzogian sense of kinship, and a minimal camera crew working with 3-D film (a Herzog first) under unique constraints, the filmmaker all but communes with the past. This truly intimate film invites viewers to commune as well and feel a profound living connection with fellow humans of 30,000 years ago. A–
